Practicing: Minimalism
What changes can a Minimalist lifestyle bring to us? What positive impact can Minimalism lifestyle bring to us if we start to try it? The most obvious changes I have felt myself are the following 5 points.Saving money As I mentioned earlier, the Minimalist lifestyle advocates that people only hold what is necessary for life. Don’t let your life be dominated by material things. Also think twice before buying and delay gratification when shopping. All these methods are helping us to save money.
When I started to try it soon after, I found that it seems like I don’t have to pay off as many credit cards every month now as I used to. The balance each month can be saved into my emergency account and travel account respectively. My next plan is to slowly have some more balances to put into a fixed deposit. As the saying goes, the economic foundation determines the superstructure, and these are the foundations to secure my future freedom. I’m glad I understand this now.
Saving time
It was mentioned above that we spend a little time every other day on organizing. Over time, I find that I don’t seem to have to get up every morning and look around for an item of clothing I want to wear today, nor do I suddenly want to use a certain tool when I can’t find it. Because I know exactly where everything is.
By assigning cleaning and decluttering to my daily routine, I no longer have to do a long mental build-up before I have to start cleaning, and then possibly spend the whole weekend cleaning my room, exhausted afterwards, and probably with no time to enjoy a nice weekend.
More focus
Focus here means that we can have more energy to focus on the things we think are important. If you’re in school and have an important exam lately, you won’t be distracted by what clothes are in style or what 3C products are popular these days. You also won’t feel distracted by a messy desk and revision. More importantly, of course, the above-mentioned methods of regular social network withdrawal will also help you to focus more on your revision work.
This is also true for working people. When you have more time and energy to focus on your work, you will be much more efficient. It’s also easier to create a mindful flow in your work.
Start focusing more on the experience than the material.
I used to be very concerned about what I had since I owned it. The latest clothes, cell phones, cosmetics, always feeling that if we have new products, we are out. After I started to try to live a minimalist lifestyle, I shifted my energy from owning material things to focusing on the experience. Recently I’ve been telling people around me that I’m now more willing to spend money on things I can’t see.
For example, in order to go farther and more professionally in this path of fitness, I made up my mind to hire a trainer to help me. This is by far the most worthwhile investment I’ve ever made. I mentioned above that I have a dedicated travel account, and this account helped me to learn to ski over spring break. Another goal this year is to flesh out the travel account a bit more so that I can learn to surf in the summer.
After focusing more on experiences, I find that my life has become richer, which has given me a lot of spiritual wealth. It has also helped me to be better able to meet the constant stream of challenges in my life.
More attention to my mental health
It’s not that I wasn’t mentally healthy before. After making life easier, I have more time to focus on my mental state. I also slowly started to give some spiritual exercises. For example, at work, if I feel like I can’t concentrate anymore, I try to take a long breath for 1 minute. (Our usual breaths are shorter, which is not conducive to concentration.) Helps me to pull my awareness back to what is important.
I also started doing a 3-5 minute meditation practice every night before I go to bed. I’m still at a very, very shallow stage, nowhere near the professional way of meditation. But before I go to bed I spend 3-5 minutes focusing on doing long breaths. This helps me to recycle my consciousness and also helps me to get rid of the negativity of the day so that I can fall asleep more peacefully.
These simple little exercises have helped me to be more energetic and focused.
It’s Your Turn
If you’ve heard my experience and want to start experimenting with this lifestyle. I have a few tips for you
Don’t rush it
Rome wasn’t built in a day, and lifestyle and mindset changes in particular can’t be done in a day or two. Mint Reading took 100 days to help us develop the habit of reading in English, and we can give ourselves a little more time to change our lifestyle. You can start by setting a small goal for yourself, for example, I’ll start by cleaning out the clothes I haven’t worn in over a year first. If I reach this small goal, I will then consider doing the next step.
Do more homework
It’s important to keep learning about anything new. What I’ve covered today is just a small part of this lifestyle primer, so if you get started, keep up the constant learning as well. There is a lot of information on the web about this. You can Baidu search: minimalist, minimalism lifestyle, decluttering, there will be many related articles. You can also search for these keywords on bilibili, there will also be many bloggers introducing some useful tips.
We are likely to try it for a while and then find that not much has changed. Or quickly return to the original lifestyle. Do not get discouraged at such times. Give yourself a few more chances. To believe that the experience will be rewarded.
Finally, I wish you all to benefit from this way of life. To be able to be more focused and free in work and life.
